The Story of an Honest Girl

Being honest can help to build strong relationships. Read the following story of an honest girl to understand this fact.

This story is one of the stories from Betal Pacchisi which is the collection of stories about Betal the ghost and King Vikramaditya.

Once upon a time, there lived a king who was persuading his prince to get married. To have better relations with the neighbouring kingdom, he asked him to marry the princess of that kingdom. So, to find out if she already has a desire to marry any other prince, the king asked the prince to visit the kingdom and find out.

So, in the disguise of a merchant, the prince reached the kingdom. However, as he fell ill, he had to take shelter in an inn. There he met a girl who was the daughter of the innkeeper. She took very good care of the prince. The prince fell in love with the beautiful and caring girl and wanted to marry her. She had also started secretly loving the prince. But both of them were unaware of their love for each other.

Before expressing his feelings to the girl and revealing that he is a prince, he thought that he would complete the work for which he had come to the kingdom. He said to the girl that he is a good friend of the prince of the neighbouring kingdom who wants to marry the princess of this kingdom. But before sending the proposal, he wants to know if the princess desires to marry any other prince. Although the prince had not disclosed his identity, the girl could make out that he is the prince himself in the disguise of a merchant. As per the prince’s (in disguise of a merchant) wish she went to the princess and learned that there is no other prince with whom she desires to get married.

As she was an honest girl, she told the truth to the prince without fearing that the prince would propose to the princess and she would lose her love. The prince was very impressed by the honesty and modesty of the girl. He revealed his real identity to the girl. He expressed his desire to marry the girl. Both of them then got married and ruled the kingdom happily ever after.

Moral: Honesty is very important for building trust in any relationship.
